San Antonio’s firefighting history began in 1854 by a few volunteers who decided it was time to protect its citizens from the ravages of fire. The “Ben Milam Fire Company”, this city’s first Fire Brigade, was organized in 1854 followed by seven more volunteer companies protecting the city until the late 1800’s. Following the volunteers’ initial efforts and bravery the San Antonio Fire Department was formed as a professionally trained and paid department of the City of San Antonio in 1891. Old Fire Station No. 1, once “Central Fire Headquarters”, houses this unique museum that is dedicated to this city’s early fire brigades and to the men and women of the SAFD that have served before and continue to serve the citizens of this great city with the traditional courage, devotion and valor.
